The return of the blog

I've had a break for about a year. A break from the blog and also a break from academic thinking. However, I feel another post brewing, inspired by some work I did recently on a massive postcode dataset (+10,000 data points). The aim was to look at childcare provision needs. Mapping people locations was really useful for the department involved, and it was good to finally apply some sophisticated graphical and analytical software to the huge dataset at my disposal (all personnel information for a world-leading university).

So, to follow will be some of my musings on a non-ArcGIS innocent getting the right GIS when Arc is not an option (because of licensing), dealing with UK postcodes and assigning geo-locations to them, then finally getting them up and visualised in a user-friendly way.
